Academics

Academic Success: Catholic Memorial seeks to provide academic success for all students. A series of supports are available to assist student learning. These include the availability of teachers before and after school, the Academic Resource Center (ARC), the Teaching Center, the availability of academic progress on Edline, conferences with teachers, and significant support from the counseling department.

Assignments: Assignments serve two purposes:

1) They positively reinforce work accomplished in the class, and

2) They provide opportunity for individual enrichment.

Depending upon the nature of the course, the teaching style of the teacher, and the learning style of the student, long-term assignments, short-term assignments, or both may be delegated. Options which take into account individual differences of students may be offered.

Students cannot expect teachers to change deadlines except for very serious reasons. Learning to manage responsibilities is part of the educational process. Students can expect to have their assignments evaluated by the teachers or used as part of a class experience.

Students who are absent are expected to be responsible for, and to take the initiative in, learning about assignments and exams scheduled during an absence. Students are also expected to take the initiative in making arrangements with teachers for make-up work deadlines. This should be done on the day of return to classes. This also applies to students on vacation. For a single day of absence, any missed test must be made up the day the student returns (the teacher may adapt a late test policy for a specific reason, and this overrides the above). Long-term projects, such as term papers, which are not submitted on the due date because a student is absent or released on that date, may be considered late. Such projects should be submitted early or sent to school via neighbor, a classmate, or a parent. In cases of severe and/or prolonged illness, the teacher may deviate from this policy.

Because of the number of classes on a student’s schedule and the amount of work assigned in each class, students should expect to have homework on a daily basis. While the amount of homework may vary, spans of time with no homework should be viewed as a signal that a student is not fulfilling academic responsibilities.

Academic Standards: There are two determining factors that affect extra-curricular eligibility:

1) Catholic Memorial High School requires that a student involved in extra-curricular activities achieve a minimum of a 1.5 G.P.A. in the previous quarter. If the previous quarter grade falls below the 1.5 G.P.A., the student will be ineligible to practice or participate during the following quarter.

2) The W.I.A.A. academic requirement states that a student must meet school and Department of Public Instruction requirements defining a full-time student and have received no more than one failing grade or incomplete in the most recent grading period.

Course/Schedule Changes: Once the master schedule has been created, schedule changes will be permitted only during the specific schedule change period. These changes must go through the Director of Counseling. Schedule change forms are available in the Counseling Center.

Credit Load: Freshman, sophomores, and juniors are required to enroll in a minimum of 6 credits. We recommend that students take a maximum of 7.5 credits, which would entail the assignment of a study hall. Seniors are required to enroll in a minimum of 5 credits.

Edline: Edline is an online service that CMH uses for school and class organization. The service provides hosting and database support for the school. Edline is aimed at improving communications between parents, students, and teachers. Notable features of Edline include the ability for students and parents to check itemized grade reports, report cards, check classroom attendance, homework assignments, and class calendars, and the ability to access documents and presentations that may be used in class. Athletic and co-curricular programs also use Edline as a communication vehicle.

Grade Point: The numerical grade, letter grade, and cumulative grade point value for most courses is as follows:

100-99=A+=4.33
98-95=A=4.0
94-93=A-=3.67
92-91=B+=3.33
90-87=B=3.00
86-85=B-=2.67
84-83=C+=2.33
82-79=C=2.00
78-77=C-=1.67
76-75=D+=1.33
74-71=D=1.00
70=D-=0.67
Below 70=F=0.00

Some courses make great demands on the intellectual ability of students, offer the possibility of gaining college credit, and/or are strongly recommended for college preparation. Because rank in class is determined by grade point average and in order not to jeopardize the rank in class of students who accept intellectual challenge, these courses are weighted. Grade point values for these courses are:

100-99=A+=5.33
98-95=A=5.0
94-93=A-=4.67
92-91=B+=4.33
90-87=B=4.00
86-85=B-=3.67
84-83=C+=3.33
82-79=C=3.00
78-77=C-=2.67
Grades of D and F are not weighted and receive the same values as a non-weighed D or F.
